A loud crash woke the slumbering child. She rubbed her eyes sleepily and looked at the doll beside her as if it had made the noise. She decided it was probably just a dream and placed her head on her pillow again.
Moments after her eyes closed, there was another crash followed by a clang. This time she knew it wasn't a dream. The noises clearly came from her closet. But her dad had promised her there were no monsters there. Either he had lied or the thing in the closet was new.
The girl almost got up to see what it was, but a much louder crash came, this time followed by a cry of pain. This led to her blanket being pulled up to her eyes as she waited for something to happen.
A thud came from her closet door. Not the sound of a hand banging to be let out, but the noise of a whole body falling into it. The noise could have been scary, but there was something pathetic about it. It was as if whatever was in the closet wanted out, but couldn't figure out how.
